Part II · Chapter 18
18. Socratic prompting
Major question
How can AI help me think instead of simply giving me the answer?
Description
Socratic prompting turns the model from an answer generator into a questioning partner. It helps you define terms, expose assumptions, justify claims, face counterexamples, and revise conclusions through a sequence of adapted questions.
I want to develop my own argument about the economic value of beauty in tourism. Do not write the paper for me and do not give me your solution. Act as a Socratic dialogue partner. Ask one question at a time. Begin by questioning what I mean by " beauty" and " economic value. " Then progressively challenge my assumptions, causal claims, evidence, counterarguments, and implications. Adapt each new question to my previous answer. Continue until my argument is sufficiently robust for me to write the paper myself.
Expected impact
Socratic prompting reverses the authority relation: you remain the primary reasoner. Each answer becomes the starting point for a new question, not a conclusion to accept.
Instead of giving me the answer, ask the questions that make me think better.
